Winston Link (1914-2001) NW709 Train No. 3, The Pocahontas, Westbound Exiting Montgomery Tunnel, Christiansburg, Virginia, 1955 Gelatin silver print, printed 1996; signed and dated in pencil and the photographer's credit stamp, with annotation 'NW709' in pencil, on the reverse, framed, a Robert Mann Gallery, New York, label on the reverse. 19 1/4 x 15 1/2 in. (48.9 x 39.4 cm.) sheet 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6 cm.) Footnotes: Literature O. Winston Link, Life Along The Line: A Photographic Portrait of America's Last Great Steam Railroad (New York, 2012), pl. 108 (variant) Note 'Link asked C.E. 'Jack' Hash of the Norfolk & Western's advertising department if he and his young son, Dan, would like to be in one of his photographs. Hash accepted, and this image of father and son has become one of Link's most popular.
