Edward Burtynsky (born 1955) Greenhouses, Almira Peninsula, Spain (from 'Water'), 2010 Chromogenic print; flush-mounted, framed, the photographer's studio label, signed in ink, and a Rena Bransten Gallery label on the reverse; this work is no. 3 from an edition of 6. 48 x 64 in. (121.9 x 162.6 cm.) Footnotes: Provenance Acquired directly from the photographer in 2014 Literature Edward Burtynsky: Water (Göttingen, 2013), p. 67 Note Edward Burtynsky's decision to shift his focus away from his typical subjects of manufactured materials and oil refineries was one of necessity. Through this body of work he argued that water, unlike oil, is not optional. Following a period of intense research typical of Burtynsky's process, the photographer set out to make images that accurately represent the human systems used to gather, redirect, and control this vital resource. Traveling across nine countries and spanning four years, Burtynsky employed a variety of tactics to visualize his message, the most significant of which was using a bird's-eye-viewpoint to communicate the enormous scale of this subject matter. Burtynsky describes his Water series as one of his most poetic and abstract bodies of work: 'We have to learn to think more long-term about the consequences of what we are doing, while we are doing it,' the photographer underscores. 'My hope is that these pictures will stimulate a process of thinking about something essential to our survival, something we often take for granted – until it's gone.' -Water, 2013 Saleroom notices: Please note that this work is from a sold-out edition.
