Turvey Of London, Circa 1740 With Italian octagonal barrels each cut with longitudinal moulded lines along the top flats, a moulded ramp at the rear of each breech, border engraved tangs decorated with foliage, border engraved rounded locks, cocks and steels, the first each signed in capitals, moulded figured full stocks (minor old splits) each carved with a shell behind the barrel tang, cast and chased mounts comprising pierced foliate side-plates each involving a shell and centred on a cartouche, foliate escutcheons engraved with owner's crest, a shell above and a satyr's mask below, spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap centred on a border of scrollwork, trigger-guards each with early form of acorn finial and engraved with a large flower-head on the bow, turned baluster ramrod-pipes, and brass-capped wooden ramrods, one with iron worm: in later lined and fitted wooden case with leather shot-flask, the exterior of the lid with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks and Turvey's barrelsmith's mark 29 cm. barrels Footnotes: The crest appears to relate to the Atherton family of Walton, Lancashire or possibly William St Clair, 20th Baron of Roslin (1707-1782) William 1 Turvey was apprenticed to Edward 1 Turvey in 1703.
