A Rare Pair Of 15-Bore Flintlock Silver-Mounted Two-Shot Superimposed-Load Breech-Loading Pistols By James Freeman, London, Circa 1725 With two-stage turn-off cannon barrels, border engraved actions each signed below the steel-spring, the breech sections octagonal changing to polygonal and engraved 'LONDON' on each top flat, border engraved tangs each decorated with a double scroll through a diamond and with retaining screw behind the finial extending over the breech, the pans each with a silver drum acting as a tap for the two charges, safety-catches, fixed trigger-guards each with trefoil finial, moulded figured butts (minor old splits) each carved with foliage behind the tang, cast and chased mounts comprising side-plates each pierced with foliage centred on a cartouche issuing from a profile grotesque head, border engraved spurred pommels, the caps with a Classical bust in relief within a border of beadwork, and vacant escutcheons each with scrolled border, grotesque mask above and a scallop shell below (some wear overall), London proof marks and Freeman's barrelsmith's mark (2) 15.3 cm. barrels Footnotes: James Paul Freeman was admitted to the freedom of the Gunmakers' Company on 5 July 1716, and in the same year took over the premises in St. Martins Lane previously occupied by Andrew Dolep to whom he had been turned over in 1705. He was elected Master in 1732 and died in 1736. Both he and his son James are noted for their breech-loading pistols For further information see D.R. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
