A provincial Irish silver waiter maker's mark CT, for Carden Terry, stamped twice 'STERLING', Cork, last quarter 18th century, circa 1780 Shaped-circular, the raised border with shell and scroll rim, on three scroll and stepped hoof feet, the centre later engraved band of scrolls, acanthus and flower motifs, centred with an engraved crest a lion rampant proper holding in the forepaws a garb also proper, above the script initials 'JMM', diameter 16.6cm, weight 8.2oz. Footnotes: This is a crest associated with the arms of the MURPHY family of Cork and later in the 19th century Dublin. They were merchants, shippers, distillers and brewers. At least one member of their direct line became Bishop of Cork. In the eighteenth century they occupied properties in Belleville, Ringmanton, Hyde Park and Clifton.
