A 17th century Charles I royalist silver locket unmarked In the form of a heart, one side with applied suspension loop, engraved to one side with a heart pierced by two arrows and the engrave words 'I live and dy in loyaltye', the other side is engraved with a single crying eye and the latin words above 'Quis temperit A lacrymis' (meaning 'Who can refrain from tears') and 'January 30 1648' (the day of Charles I execution), the covering side pulls apart to reveal an applied pressed portrait of the King Charles I based on that produced by the medallist Thomas Rawlins, the other side is engraved 'Prepared be to follow me C R', height 2.1cm. Footnotes: A closely comparable locket, also engraved with the heart pierced by two crossed arrows, resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Museum No.: M.811-1926).
