A set of four George III silver-gilt salts David Hennell, London 1762 Oval bellied form with vertical flutes, gadroon rim, on four shell-capped and paw feet, underside with engraved crest an ox-yoke in bend or with bows gules and motto above PRO PATRIA, together with four later silver-gilt Old English pattern salt spoons, Charles Eley, London 1827. (8) Footnotes: This is the crest associated with the arms of the HAY family. They are recorded as being of Smithfield and Haystoun co. Peebles and are in 1762 petitioning for the right to inherit the Baronetage of Nova Scotia of the same place. It was James HAY (died 1810) who claimed and assumed the title in 1762. However his claim was not supported by the Lyon Court until 1805, when a jury recognised him as the 4th Baronet. James HAY was the great-great-grandson of John HAY, the younger brother of the grandfather of the first Baronet Sir James HAY (died 1654), a descendant of James VI of Scotland.
