GERALD BENNEY: a pair of silver tumblers, a small silver goblet, and a silver-gilt and enamelled napkin ring London 1977, London 1975, and London 1972 The pair of tumblers, London 1977, also stamped with Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee mark, with plain polished rim, bark-effect texture covering surface of curved body below rim, with gilded interior; the goblet, London 1975, with narrow polished rim, bowl with bark-effect textured surface, on plain polished slightly concave stem, on a polished circular foot, with gilded interior, also stamped 'GERALD BENNEY LONDON' on underside; the napkin ring, London 1972, of cylindrical form, polished silver-gilt with white enamelled band, height 5.4cm, 11.8cm and 3.2cm, weight total 12.5oz. (4) Footnotes: GERALD BENNEY CBE RDI (1930-2008) Gerald Benney was one of the most outstanding goldsmiths of the 20th century. With works being continuously produced for over fifty years, from private commissions to mass production. Born in Hull, Yorkshire, in 1930, Benney received many commissions from the Royal Family and was the first craftsman to hold four Royal Warrants simultaneously: from HM The Queen, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales. Gerald Benney decided that his home at Beenham House in Berkshire was the place to develop the use of enamels. The first steps were to travel to Zurich to find an enameller who worked for Burch Korrodi. By chance he came across the Norwegian Berger Bergensen who had worked for the House of Bolin as well as Burch. Bergensen was persuaded to come to Beenham House and taught the Benney workforce all he knew about enamelling. With Alan Evans and Robert Winter becoming notable master enamellers for Benney. It took several years to master the craft. He refined and mastered this art enamelling larger surface areas than Fabergé. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
