The underside is incised with Lord Chorley's personal nickname and Lady Chorley's first name, along with the dates of their wedding and anniversary, '15·4·25·75', or 15th April 1925 - 1975. Lucie Rie was a friend of Lord and Lady Chorley during and after World War II, during which time the family commissioned a number of works directly from the artist.
