Sophie Ryder (British, born 1963) Dancing Hares bronze with a blue-grey patina 94.4 cm. (37 1/8 in.) high Footnotes: Provenance The Artist, from whom acquired by the present owner Private Collection, U.K. The hare came into Sophie Ryder's output in the 1980s, initially appearing as the animal itself in a more representative manner. By the early 1990s, however, the hare had taken on specifically female form, in tandem with the male minotaur that already occupied a strong vein in her work. Both are combinations of a human body with an animal head, a mask that allows the viewer more room to interpret the work according to their own response and context. The hare carries a folkloric element to it – a source of much of Ryder's inspiration. An emblem of renewal and fertility in Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon myth, the hare evokes a very different atmosphere to the minotaur. Where, outside of Ryder's work, the minotaur seems instinctively threatening, the hare offers a more peaceful air of elegance and graceful movement, even pacifying the minotaur to its own mood in the works where they feature together. In fitting with this, the present work shows three hares dancing in unison, arms overlapped, and heads tilted in dynamic and expressive poses, exuding a strong feeling of motion. Rather than carrying the body of a human, the figures here are purely the animal itself, the hare. Given the developed nature of the hybrid hare by this stage, it seems a conscious choice to revert to an earlier form for this piece. In choosing this form, Ryder evokes the movement for which the animal is known more than she does the psychological element brought about by the human comparison.
