Prunella Clough (British, 1919-1999) Crane and Sun signed 'Clough' (lower right); further signed and titled 'P. CLOUGH CRANE & SUN' (on the stretcher) oil on canvas 56 x 46 cm. (22 x 18 1/8 in.) Footnotes: Provenance With The Redfern Gallery, London Private Collection, U.K. Prunella Clough's artistic approach grew and changed throughout her career. She took an early interest in industrial subjects in the late 1940s, which by the early '50s had developed into a highly distinctive and personal style within the wider emerging movement of post-war Realism. Key to her visual interest was the dynamic created between man and machinery, the organic with the industrial, in dilapidated factory settings. It is within this context that Crane and Sun (lot 51) comes. By the 1960s, Abstraction had picked up momentum, and Clough moved into a simpler, less representative style that we see in Frozen Pond (lot 50). She would move further into pure Abstraction later in her career, focusing more on the interaction between colours and the manipulation of shape. Untitled (lot 48), and Tide Race (lot 49), are good examples of this later approach. We are grateful to Gerard Hastings for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
