Jessica Dismorr (British, 1885-1939) Portrait of Bertha Jones oil on canvas 50.6 x 35.5 cm. (19 7/8 x 14 in.) Painted circa 1920 Footnotes: Provenance With Andrew Leslie Gallery, London, where acquired by the present owner Quentin Stevenson Exhibited London, Mansard Gallery, Group X, 26 March-24 April 1920 London, New Art Salon, Group Exhibition, 17 February 1920 (as Portrait Study) This work is the sole survivor of four 'portrait studies' exhibited at the New Art Salon in February 1920, alongside works by prominent Modernist artists such as Signac and Modigliani. Jessica met Bertha Jones, a gifted artist herself, at the Académie de La Palette in Paris, where they studied between 1910 and 1913, taught by an open-minded and progressive group of artists. The two would remain friends until Dismorr's death in 1939, and lived a floor apart in the same building between 1924 and 1931.
