Jessica Dismorr (British, 1885-1939) The Spring Dance signed '.DISMORR.' (lower right) watercolour, pen and ink 28.5 x 35.7 cm. (11 1/4 x 14 in.) Executed in 1912 Footnotes: Provenance Jackie Pruskin, early 1980s, from whom acquired by the present owner Quentin Stevenson The Spring Dance is described by Quentin Stevenson as 'unique in Dismorr's surviving work'. It displays just how quickly Dismorr had taken on board a variety of influences from her time at La Palette. Compared with Lot 1, Luxembourg Gardens, we see an entirely different style – simplified, more essential and less representative in shape and colour in a manner not dissimilar to Primitivism, while drawing on ideas of 'Arcadia' explored by Cézanne, Gauguin, and Matisse. The work coincides with Dismorr's involvement with Rhythm, a London-based group publication aiming at a radical modernisation of the arts.
