Vanessa Bell (British, 1879-1961) Henrietta and Nerissa Garnett in the Charleston garden stamped with estate stamp (lower left) oil on paper 45.3 x 62 cm. (17 3/4 x 24 3/8 in.) Executed circa 1953 Footnotes: Provenance The Artist's Estate With The Bloomsbury Workshop, London, where acquired by the present owners Private Collection, U.K. In the present work, painted at Charleston, Vanessa Bell gives us an intimate scene between her granddaughters, Henrietta and Nerissa Garnett. The girls were to grow up against a highly intellectual and creative, if rather complex, backdrop. Their mother, the magnetic and intelligent Angelica Garnett, was herself the daughter of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant – although she only found out that Grant was her true father, not Bell's husband Clive, when she was eighteen years old. The girls' father was David Garnett, a friend of Bell and Grant within the Bloomsbury group and a talented author. We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
