SIMPSON, WALLIS [THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR]. 1896-1986. Autograph Note Signed ('W') to an unknown recipient, on stationery slip with the Windsor arms printed in blue, sent with a delivery of flowers (?), n.p., n.d., reading 'A rose - to [?] - for Hugh. Love, W.' When Wallis Simpson was a young Baltimore socialite at school she took dance lessons, partnering with a young man named Hugh Spilman. She would remain in touch with him, and when her first marriage to Navy Lieutenant Win Spencer failed, she moved into the Warren Green Hotel in Warrenton, VA, to establish residency in the state, in order to file for divorce. During that time, Hugh Spilman was her constant companion, and she once was overheard saying 'Oh, Hughie, if you just had some money, I would marry you.' Although life would take her far beyond that social scene, the flowers (or flower) may have been sent to a common acquaintance in memory of Hugh Spilman at the time of his death in 1980. Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
