FROST ON MATTHEW ARNOLD. FROST, ROBERT. 1874-1963. Autograph Letter Signed ('Robert Frost'), to 'Miss [Helen] Adams' on the poetry and prose of Matthew Arnold, 2 pp, 8vo, (of a bifolium), South Shaftesbury, VT, July 27, 1934. FROST ON MATTHEW ARNOLD AND THE PASSAGE OF THE OXUS: 'He may not have been conscious that he was speaking of himself, but it is a meaning that is always just below the surface with him in his poetry ... His foiled circuitousness all the way from the high cradle to the longed-for waves of the Aral, are what I like him for.' Helen Adams (1879-1967) was the sister of Frederick B. Adams, Sr, and aunt to Frederick B. Adams, Jr, who was a frequent correspondent and friend of Frost. See Richardson, et al, The Letters of Robert Frost, Volume 3, pp 415-6.
