DOUGLAS, ROBERT. 1694-1770. The Peerage of Scotland. Edinburgh: R. Fleming, 1764. Large 4to (360 x 242 mm). 10 engraved plates with coats-of-arms, list of subscribers. Rebacked contemporary calf, spine with 7 raised bands, morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers. Binding rubbed, somewhat loose, with one quire detached, several paper repairs, browning and spotting. Provenance: Property from a Pasadena Estate. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION THUS. Douglas died before completing a planned second volume — it was completed posthumously and published by Bell & Bradfute in 1798 as Baronage of Scotland, Containing an Historical and Genealogical Account of the Gentry of that Kingdom. A revised edition was later published by John Philip Wood in 1813, which in turn became the basis of Sir James Balfour Paul's The Scots Peerage, published between 1904 and 1914.
