CORNELIUS VANDERBILT-SIGNED STOCK CERTIFICATE FOR THE NEW YORK AND HARLEM RAILROAD. VANDERBILT, CORNELIUS. 1794-1877. Document Signed ('C. Vanderbilt') on verso, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, granting John M. Dobin 500 shares in the New York and Harlem Railroad Company, 1 p, oblong 8vo (161 x 267 mm), n.p., April 12, 1864, light creasing, recto signatures obscured, float-mounted and framed to 449 x 714 mm. Provenance: Private Collection, Beverly Hills, California. The New York and Harlem Railroad (today's Metro-North RR Harlem Line) was one of the first railroads in the US. It originally ran between Lower Manhattan and Harlem as a series of horse-drawn railway carriages before converting to steam and later electric engines. In 1864 the railroad was purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt who, five years later, consolidated it with the Hudson River RR to form the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, a precursor to the New York Central Railroad.
