FLINT, ROYAL. 1754-1790. Letter signed ('Royal Flint'), to James Bowdoin, as Governor of Massachusetts, regarding a question of the remittance of 3 million dollars from the State of Massachusetts to the United States Government, 1 p, 4to (257 x 197 mm), Boston, December 10, 1785, Fold creases, slight chipping to lower corners and right edge, browning. In part: 'Sir, The information given to Mr. Appleton, of the balance of three million dollar gold emission bills, due from this State to the United States, is communicated to him in a private letter from Mr Osgood, not from the Commissioners of the Treasury ... Mr Appleton does not think that he is authorized by his office to call upon the Treasurer of this State for any explanation respecting the public accounts. The investigation of this matter he supposes belongs to the Committee of accounts, who have a right to any information from the Treasurer. This Committee intends to ascertain the facts relating to the above mentioned balance, said to be due from this state upon the requisitions of Congress....' Royal Flint fought in the revolution and was with Washington's forces at Valley Forge over the winter of 1777-1778. After the war, repayment of state debt to the United States was a complicated affair involving both the government and private banking. Royal Flint operated as a speculator both in land and in paper, and an agent for William Duer and the Scioto group. Lot to be sold without reserve.
