Provenance: Every Picture Tells a Story, c.2005. In the opening layout of David Shannon's charming follow up to the 'Oh, David!' series of picture books, he introduces the character of Alice, based on his own young daughter, who is a 'temporary fairy': 'My name is Alice. I am a Fairy! / I'm not a Permanent Fairy. I'm a Temporary Fairy. / You have to pass a lot of tests to be a Permanent Fairy.'
