A Jacques Le Maire brass Butterfield-type sundial, French, circa 1730, signed Jcs Le Maire A Paris, the rectangular dial with three engraved chapter rings for latitudes 43, 46 and 49 degrees, gnomon with stylised dolphin support using the tail as a latitude pointer, compass with pointer for magnetic declination over the range 20-0-20 degree with blued steel needle, the reverse engraved with nineteen cities and latitudes, closed 7mm x 57mm x 77mm Footnotes: Provenance Tesseract, New York State, June 2004 Private collection. Jacques Le Maire (fl.1714-1762) worked from premises on the quai de l'Horloge and was closely associated with Julian Le Roy, some of whose sundial designs he constructed. In 1728 he presented a reflecting telescope to the Académie des Sciences and he was a member of Société des Arts.
