A rare Edmund Culpeper brass inclining sundial, English, circa 1700, signed Edm Culpeper Fecit, the octagonal dial with fixed hinged gnomon and inclining dial plate moving over a folding degree arc, dial plate delicately engraved with foliate designs and two serpent heads, inset compass rose with blued steel needle and fretted North and South initials, the reverse with twenty towns and latitudes, in fish skin covered case, dial closed 12.7mm x 54mm x 65.8mm, case 20.7mm x 66mm x 80mm (2) Footnotes: Provenance Christies London, lot 207 16th July 1992 Private Collection A very similar Culpeper dial is housed in the Oxford Museum of the History of Science, Inv.
