A fine Louis Chapotot silver inclining dial, French, circa 1700, signed CHAPOTOT A PARIS, the octagonal universal equinoctial dial with engraved list of nineteen towns and respective latitudes on the base and a further twenty French towns, the dial plate inclines for latitudes 0-60 degrees and hour plate and gnomon finely engraved with scrolling designs 60mm x 62mm x 70mm Footnotes: Provenance Christies, lot 272 4th June 1987 Private collection For similar Chapotot dial but is brass, see Delande. D & E, Cadrans Solaires, p.268,269 Louis Chapatot was a maker of mathematical instruments from about 1676 until 1721, he finally settled his workshop at Quai de l'Horloge in Paris under the sign 'A la Sphere'. He was later joined by his son Jean who carried on the workshop until 1721.
