A rare Benjamin Martin brass universal dial or portable equatorial instrument, English, circa 1780, signed G Wright Invt. Martin London Fecit, the silvered ring is divided 0-90 degrees and is held in a clamp with vernier scale, pivoted inside this ring is a second ring with a cross bar carrying sights, surmounted by a silvered disc at the top with 24 hour scale subdivided into four minute intervals, the circular base is mounted with two spirit levels and raised on four levelling screw feet, 300mm x 190mm x 170mm Footnotes: For similar instruments see Wynter & Turner, Scientific Instruments, Studio Vista 1975, fig.147.
