A rare Gabriel Stokes brass analematic and horizontal sundial, Irish, mid 18th century, signed Gab.Stoaks Dublin Fecit the silvered brass horizontal dial with shaped gnomon mounted above engraved eight point compass rose within hour scale marked with Roman numerals reading to 5 minutes, analematic dial with elliptical chapter ring and replaced pin gnomon sliding over month, zodiac and declination scales, inside the hour scale is an equation of time scale lettered ' Watch Too Slow' and 'Watch Too Fast', 140mm x 320mm x 205mm Footnotes: Provenance Stuart Talbot, April 1992 Private Collection Gabriel Stokes was born in 1682 and attended the King's Hospital School in Dublin. He became Deputy Surveyor General of Ireland. He is known to have sold bow quadrants, slide rules and sundials and he also invented the pantometron or surveyor's square.
