An Agate 'coin' snuff bottle Probably Imperial, attributed to the Palace Workshops, 1798–1840 Of flattened globular form, with a straight neck and flat lip, the oval foot rim surrounding a recessed foot, carved with the obverse and reverse of a Mexican eight-reale coin, complete with its milled edge, bearing the head of Charles IV of Spain encircled by the legend CAROLUS•IIII•DEI•GRATIA•1796, the reverse with the Spanish coat of arms encircled with the legend HISPAN•ETIND•REX•M•8R•F•M• the Latin inscription notably crisp, the narrow sides with oval panels, the interior very well hollowed. 2 1/8in (5.4cm) high Footnotes: Provenance Hugh Moss Ltd., 26 September 1996 Spanish silver was frequently used as currency in China's nineteenth century seaports.
