John Francis (British, 1780-1861): A carved white marble bust of George Granville, 2nd Duke of Sutherland (1786-1861) The sitter looking slightly to dexter, signed and inscribed to the reverse George Granville II Duke of Sutherland. 1834 J.FRANCIS SCULPT. LONDON,on turned circular socle, 53cm wide, 32cm deep, 76cm high Footnotes: Provenance Sold Bonhams, The Dunrobin Attic Sale, 20th April 2021 (sale 26672), lot 410. George Granville, 2nd Duke of Granville also: Viscount Trentham until 1803, Earl Gower between 1803 and 1833 and Marquess of Stafford in 1833, was a British Whig MP and married to Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower. Before becoming an MP, he fought in Prussia and Russia against Napoleon's French forces. In 1845, he employed Sir Charles Barry to make vast alterations to the family seat, Dunrobin Castle transforming the castle into a 189-room ducal palace. John Francis studied under Samuel Joseph and Francis Chantrey. Around 1830 he was granted the patronage of the Duke of Sussex and most likely through this connection became one of the favourite portrait sculptors to members of the Whig party, sculpting amongst many others; Lord John Russell, one which is in the National Portrait Gallery, London, NPG 678, dated 1832 and one in Windsor Castle, dated 1838. As well as, Lord Melbourne, best remembered as adviser and mentor to the young Queen Victoria, which was sold by Bonhams, Los Angeles, Fine European Furniture and Decorative Arts, 9 December 2013, lot 317.
