An unusual Ziegler carpet North West Persia, circa 1880 On attractive turquoise ground, with bold palmettes and rich madder border, the piece has been cut and shut, 352cm x 291.5cm Footnotes: Please note that this lot is subject to the US embargo on the import of carpets of Iranian origin as of 06.08.2018 This striking example of a Zeigler -with unusual turquoise ground, typifies all the attractions of late 19th century Persian design. The name Zeigler refers to the Anglo Swiss company established in Manchester in 1883, which developed the original, and very distinctive 'Zeigler' pattern. The company had workshops in Arak and Tabriz and directly supplied famous retailers like Harvey Nichols and Liberty & Company. The company used the most up-to-date dying techniques and employed the best weavers and master craftsmen. With their overall boisterous flower patterns and soft, muted palettes it is no wonder that the Zeigler carpet proved such a hit with western buyers.
