A set of fourteen 19th century mahogany and satinwood dining chairs including two armchairs, each with ebonised and boxwood stringing, the tablet inlay top rail satinwood inlaid top rail above a vertical reeded pilaster splat, on square tapering front legs terminating in spade feet, with square splayed rear legs, each armchair: 55.5cm wide, 55cm deep x 87.5cm high, each side chair: 51cm wide x 50cm deep x 86cm high, (20in wide x 19 1/2in deep x 33 1/2in high) (14) Footnotes: The present chairs appear based upon a design by Gillows for a set of twelve dining chairs, each with a similar splat to the former. In 1797 this comparable set were supplied to John (or possibly James) Wilde of Dane Bank, Lymm in Cheshire. Notably, as with the offered examples, the Gillows originals have satinwood inlaid tablet toprails and closely related splats, each comprised of five vertical uprights. This drawing is illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Woodbridge, pl. 171, p. 198.
