An ormolu mounted simulated calamander and giltwood partners' writing table The frieze apparently dating to the Regency period (1810-1825), the gilt mouldings, legs and enrichments probably replacements of a later date, stamped for 'W. Priest' The palmette and foliate pattern tooled leather inset top with projecting rounded angles, above a gadrooned edge, over six opposing panel mounted frieze drawers, interspersed with four projecting gilt gesso lioness or leopard mask angles, on four turned lotus leaf wrapped and reeded tapering legs terminating in lion paw feet with recessed brass castors, stamped: 'W. PRIEST, 17 & 24 WATER ST., BLACKFRIARS, 563' 159cm wide x 108cm deep x 79cm high, (62 1/2in wide x 42 1/2in deep x 31in high) Footnotes: Provenance The present lot featured Sotheby's, London, 24 April 1998, Fine English Furniture, lot 140. Thereafter property of a private UK collector. William Priest stocked his own furniture as well as quality second hand pieces by other makers. One of his trade labels records a furniture warehouse and it is thought Priest was involved in selling second hand furniture which he marked before disposal. For a selection of furniture stamped by Priest, see C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, London, 1996, pp.'s 379-384. Later on he is listed as auctioneer, appraiser and upholsterer during the period 1837-40, G. Beard & C. Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, p.717. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TP TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
