Břetislav Benda (Czechoslovakian, 1897-1983): A carved white marble figure of a kneeling maiden The semi clad female holding her left hand to her bobbed hair, drapery to lower body, on rectangular integral rusticated plinth base, signed to the front B.BENDA, and dated to the right upper side, 1944-1956, 84cm high, 27cm wide, 37cm deep approximately Footnotes: The Czechoslovakian sculptor Břetislav Benda was a student of Josef Václav Myslbek and member of the Mánes Union of Fine Arts from 1923. Benda's works often focused on the female body and his architectural sculpture includes interior work at the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, the Komerční banka in Náchod and a relief for a 1935 savings bank in České Budějovice. In 1968, the Council of Czech Jewish Religious Communities commissioned Benda to create a memorial sculpture at the former trade fair building in Prague but the sculpture was eventually placed in the town of Terezín.
