A George III mahogany tripod kettle stand Circa 1765 The circular top with a raised moulded edge surmounted by a waved gallery, on three C-scrolls terminating in foliate carved scrolled corbels, with three addorsed elongated scroll form columns each headed with waterfall carving, on acanthus clasped C-scroll carved downswept legs, approximate diameter of the top: 27cm; 63cm high. Footnotes: Provenance Property of a private UK collector. A design for a closely comparable 'Tea Kettle Stand' originally appeared in the second edition of A Society of Upholsterers' Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, Part III, published in c.1765. This drawing is also replicated in Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, comp. by E. White, 2000, Woodbridge, pl. 93 (wrongly printed as 42), p. 315. Of further interest in relation to the offered lot is a design for a candle stand which was originally featured in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, pl. CXX, 1763, which is also illustrated in Ibid, p. 303. This example has very similar waterfall carving to that on the upper part of the present kettle stand.
