A George III mahogany kneehole dressing table 1760-1765, probably made by a cabinet maker located either on or alongside the historic St. Martin's Lane, in London With one long mahogany lined frieze drawer fitted with a sliding leather inset top, enclosing a central sliding hinged adjustable ratcheted mirror, flanked by ten lidded compartments, two divided pull-out compartments and one open compartment, with a concealed swivel hinged stationery drawer to one side, over a scroll, cabochon and rocaille carved apron and a door to the central recess, flanked by six short oak lined drawers, on shaped ogee bracket feet, terminating in later ceramic castors, the handles apparently original, 81cm wide x 49cm deep x 78.5cm high, (31 1/2in wide x 19in deep x 30 1/2in high) Footnotes: The general design of the offered lot relates to a Thomas Chippendale drawing for a 'buroe dressing table' originally published in the first edition of his seminal work, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754. This is also illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, London, fig. 416, p. 228. It is interesting to note that the distinctive C-scroll, rocaille and foliate carved apron on the present dressing table conforms closely to the apron featuring on a 1760 design for a library table. The latter of which Chippendale contributed to a publication of the same year, entitled Household Furniture in Genteel Taste, pl. 32, a Society of Uphosterers. The same drawing appears in C. Gilbert's previously referenced book, Ibid, fig. 451, p. 247 and is again replicated in Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, compiled by E. White, 2000, Woodbridge, p. 211. Certain cabinet makers operating at the highest level of the business during the 18th century were based either on St. Martin's Lane, or in a couple of cases just off this historic London road. All of these workshops, including those run by renowned figures such as William Vile, John Cobb, William and John Linnell and of course arguably most importantly, Thomas Chippendale, produced pieces of the finest quality and in the most fashionable styles of the time.
