A third quarter 19th century Elkington & Co. silvered electrotype charger depicting Temperantia After The model By Francois Briot (French, 1550-1612) Of circular form, the dished centre decorated with a medallion cast with the figure of Temperance holding a wine-cup and ewer surrounded by a wide strapwork inner border with four figural cartouches depicting the classical elements flanked by male and female terms, the corresponding outer strapwork border with eight cartouches depicting Minerva and the Seven Liberal Arts interspersed by male maskheads within a gadrooned rim, the rear with applied diamond factory mark numbered 794 and with contemporary engraved inscription To J.S from J.N.G. WITH REMBERRANCES OF MANY YEARS BROTHERLY KINDNESSES, 1869: together with a similar slightly smaller unmarked electroplated charger depicting Temperantia mounted within a a bowl shaped liner, the first, 47cm diameter, the second, 45m diameter approximately overall (2) Footnotes: The 'Temperantia' Basin, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is signed with the initials 'FB' on the central boss for Francois Briot, the most celebrated member of a French family of medallists and die-cutters. A companion 'Mars' Basin also by Briot is now in the permanent collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris ' In the 19th century, Elkington, Mason and Co. began production of electrotypes which allowed copies of items such as the 'Temperantia' and 'Mars' basins, the former of which was used as the Wimbledon Ladies Singles Tennis Trophy.
