His promotional assignments often took him to the countryside, where he photographed the rolling hills, rugged shoreline, and winding country roads. He also captured everyday encounters with people and animals. In a lecture, Erwitt explained this particular encounter with small dog within the village of Ballycotton, in County Cork: 'I bark at dogs, and sometimes I get odd reactions.
