Erwitt was deeply affected by Kennedy's assassination. During his funeral, he stood away from the crowds and focused a 600mm telephoto lens on the First Lady. This image of Jacqueline Kennedy's veiled face expressed the shock, disbelief, and sorrow felt by the Kennedy family and the nation as a whole.
