He arrived in Havana with a Canadian film crew to take photographs of the leaders who had recently overturned the government. His portraits of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara capture both men smoking. Erwitt recounted, 'Of course they had charisma. To mount a revolution and to win requires charisma plus. They were totally open. I just sat around with the boys for about a week and took a lot of snaps. They're kind of imposing chaps.'
