Hermès: a Rare Lilac Purple 'Accidents de l'Equitation' Silk Scarf c.1945 Print designed by Hugo Grygkar, after an engraving by Victor Adam Condition Grade C+ 80cm x 80cm Footnotes: This scarf was designed by the prolific Hermès artist, Hugo Grygkar (1907-1959). Grygkar was the first artist to design scarves for Hermès, with his debut design released in 1937. Grygkar reputedly found inspiration for his compositions in ordinary objects, books, as well as paintings. He based the design of this scarf on an engraving by French painter and lithographer, Victor Adam (1801-1866). It depicts a running border of twelve images of potential riding accidents with their corresponding titles, which are as follows, 'La Vendange forcée - Moment de gaité - Le bain inévitable - Gare la dessous - Course au Clocher - Un temps degalop - Promenade à la halle - Danger des passions - Chasse au marais - Retour de la promenade - Partie de plaisir - Dommages et intêrets'. The centre of the scarf depicts the design's name and a horse's head positioned above crutches and a wooden leg, reminiscent of a skull and crossbones. A version of this scarf appears in Geneviève Fontan's Carrés d'Art IV, Dictionnaire illustré des carrés Hermès, 2021, rep. p.30.
