This remarkable example of Romanian Jewish artist Reuven Rubin's work was previously in the collection of Rabbi Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, whose family fled from Nazi-occupied Germany in 1939 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Gottschalk is perhaps best known for his leadership in the Reform Judaism movement, including his thirty-year tenure at Hebrew Union College, first as president and then chancellor. Gottschalk oversaw the ordination of the first female rabbis in the United States and Israel, and was instrumental in the development of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
