Rubbed, corners bumped, scattered foxing. Provenance: Jan van der Hoeven (Dutch surgeon, 1863-1941, bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Dedicated to Immanuel Kant, who provided the epilogue, here printed for the first time. 'This book is less valuable for its hypothesis asserting that the moisture of the ventricles of the brain is the organ of the soul, than for its exact investigations of the cerebral origins of the nerves' (Choulant-Frank).
