Spine sunned, Light browning and foxing, a few small dampstains at edges, library stamps on title page and verso of each plate (illegible). FIRST EDITION. 'Robert Carswell ... personally painted 2,000 water-colors of pathological specimens. His great pathological atlas contains splendid hand-colored lithographs which he selected from his collection of water-colors and personally drew on stone' (Garrison-Morton-Norman 2291). William Osler quoted from the DNB in describing his own copy of this rare atlas: 'The plates for this great work on pathological anatomy were furnished from his own drawings and put upon the stone by himself. These illustrations have, for their artistic merit and for fidelity, never been surpassed, while the matter represents the highest point which the science of morbid anatomy had reached before the introduction of the microscope' (Osler 2250).
