Original pen, ink and watercolor on silk, 'Sketch Design for a Fan/ Full Size,' 18 x 22 inches (460 x 560 mm), noted in ink, 'MOTIF: Blue Kingfisher (African),' and below beneath a design for the handle, 'FRONT STICK OF HANDLE - IVORY,' signed 'William M. Timlin/ 1914' in lower right corner, with his owl device lower left. RARE WATERCOLOR DESIGN ON SILK—A BLUE KINGFISHER MOTIF FOR A FAN. William Timlin was born in Northumberland, the son of colliery foreman. He won a scholarship to study art and architecture at Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle, and in 1912 moved to South Africa, where he remained. In 1914, while working as a professional architect, he founded the Art Section of the Kimberley Athenaeum Club, and began exhibiting his 'poetic fantasies,' ink and watercolor designs and drawings.
