Buffon, a member of minor gentry in Bordeaux who was later elevated to the title of Count, was a polymath and avid scientist. He was appointed head of the Jardin du Roi in 1739, and appointed to the Académie Française in 1753. Despite having his detractors, this work was translated into numerous languages and widely published.
