Photograph album containing approximately 301 silver print photographs, 8 3/4 x 11 3/8 inches through 3 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches, most hand-colored, mounted in album with most photographs captioned on the leaf below the image. Album disbound. Provenance: Joseph R. Morris, American Foreign Service in Beijing. Photograph album compiled by Alice and Joseph R. Morris of the American Foreign Service of their time in Beijing (Peking), with photographs by C.E. Le Munyon, a United States-born photographer active in Hong Kong from 1902-1906 and in Beijing from 1906 through about 1927 where he had a photography studio and camera supply shop called the Emporium in Hatamen Street, Beijing. Includes portraits of notables such as Emperor Puyi; the Emperor with his father Prince Chun; the Empress Dowager Cixi; Sun Yat-sen; Zhang Zuolin; and the Emperor with Empress (Wanrong?) and Mei Lanfang (in male and female attire). Landmarks include the Tomb of Foshou Gongzhu; Xihuang Temple; Temple of Confucius; Big Bell Temple (Dazhong Temple); Yonghe Temple (Lama Temple); Beihai Park (Winter Palace); Yingtai Island; Imperial Ancestral Temple (Taimiao); the Great Wall scenes and views; Zhengyangmen (Chien Men gate); Guangyuan Water Gate; unidentified seven-story Pagoda; Biyong Hall (The Hall of Classics); Summer Palace views including Long Corridor, boat landing, covered walk, large overviews, and Duobao Glazed Pagoda, etc.; Temple of Heaven and details; many Forbidden City views; Pi Yun ssu; Ming Tombs scenes and views; Nankow Pass; Legation District scenes; images of street vendors, shops, workers, restaurant, and a funeral, Nanyuan race track, etc. The album also includes images of the Morris family among the sites of China, their home, their servants and even their pets. The album also includes scenes of a typhoon in Shanghai, the wreck of Chinese warlord Zhang Zuolin's train and even a small selection of Chinese punishment copy prints.
