Progress and Poverty: An Inquiry into the Cause of Industrial Depressions, and of Increase of Want with Increase of Wealth. The Remedy. San Francisco: Wm. M. Hinton & Company, Printers, 1879. 8vo (215 x 135 mm). Publisher's pebbled brown cloth, spine gilt. Minor wear at head of spine, and upper fore-edge corner. Custom cloth folding case. WITH: SIGNED slip ('Henry George') on John W. Lovell letterhead, laid in. WITH: printed broadside, 'The Single Tax Platform,' The Single Tax Library, issue no 34, September 3, 1890, laid in. Provenance: Hon. Stanley C. Wisniewski (pencil inscription). A FINE COPY OF GEORGE'S MOST INFLUENTIAL WORK, 'the most influential of American works on economics' (Grolier), ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES printed for the author in San Francisco before the Appleton trade edition the following year. 'The single tax theory is only incidental in this significant American contribution to economic and sociological thought' (Howes). George's single tax solution, as proposed in the rare leaflet included here, did not take hold, but his work would have a profound impact on future economists ranging from Commons and Clark in the United States to Wicksteed in England.
