Publisher's cloth, original pictorial dust jacket, some chipping, closed tear to lower front panel, worn. Provenance: Ludwig Bemelmans (signed presentation to): Elinor Green (1920-2012, promotions director at Simon & Schuster). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, PRESENTATION COPY. Elinor Green was promotions director at Simon and Schuster in the 1940s, and married Merle Miller in 1948. Unsurprisingly, they divorced after 4 years, but remained friends. In his memoir, On Being Different (1971), he wrote of the time and marriage: 'My homosexual drives were so much stronger than they ever were before or since that I said I've got to get out of this situation or it's going to kill me...'
