Engraved folding map and 4 engraved plates, two of which are folding. Contemporary paneled calf, gilt-lettered spine label. Title-page with some wear to fore-edge, very faint dampstain, one folding plate with tape repair to verso, recased, joints rubbed, some wear to spine, but an attractive copy overall. Provenance: Captain Norbury, Portsmouth, (signature on rear flyleaf dated July 23, 1736). FIRST EDITION. 'The fullest account of California, the natives and other features, of any of the old voyages' (Cowan), mentioning gold in California and providing the albatross-shooting source for Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
