Gobelet à jambe couvert en verre gravé, Nuremburg, deuxième moitié XVIIe siècle A Nuremburg engraved goblet and a cover, second half 17th century The round funnel bowl reserved a foliate cartouche to both sides, one enclosing a landscape scene depicting two men in frock coats representing Joshua and Caleb, carrying an oversized bunch of grapes suspended from a pole between them, the other containing a large stylised flowerhead, the sides with large flowering plants beneath insects in flight, set on a tall hollow multi-knopped stem with two compressed shoulder knops above an inverted baluster and a basal knop all separated by collars, the spreading foot with a foliate garland and neatly folded at the footrim edge, the high domed cover with a foliate garland and tall multi-knopped finial, 30.4cm high (the cover associated) (2) Footnotes: Provenance: With Uwe Friedleben Kunsthandel, 5 January 1987 Christian von Reitzenstein Collection The scene depicts the Biblical story of Joshua and Caleb, two of Moses' spies sent from Kadesh to explore the land of Canaan (Numbers 13).
