2002 Smart Fortwo Project VIN. WME01MC012H039814 599cc Turbocharged Inline 3-Cylinder Engine Electronic Multipoint Fuel Injection 55bhp at 5,250rpm 6-Speed Automatic Gearbox 4-Wheel Independent Suspension Front Disc, Rear Drum Brakes *Early series 1 European Model *Delivered new to Belgium *Partially disassembled project requiring refurbishment THE SMART CAR The Smart Car was originally conceived by Swatch CEO Nicolas Hayek as a small, inexpensive city car that could be almost infinitely customized for the individual buyer. His initial plans called for two seats and an innovative hybrid drivetrain, which he took to Volkswagen to share development costs. After disagreements with VW's domineering new chief Ferdinand Piech, Hayek knocked on Daimler-Benz AG's door with a similar offer. Daimler took up the project, creating the new Smart division within the Daimler-Benz hierarchy, under a new company name of MCC (Micro Compact Car, AG). As the car was developed, Hayek became increasingly disillusioned with its departure from his concept, and soon he was bought out entirely as Daimler forged ahead, bringing the plucky little city car to production in 1998. Built through several generations, and models including a coupe, four-door, and roadster, Smart is now dedicated to producing compact EVs for the Chinese market, with their signature avant-garde styling and joyful character. THE CAR OFFERED Offered here from the Barry Taylor Estate is a Smart ForTwo Cabrio. Hailing from the 2002 model year, this first generation A450-series Smart predates the official US imported models, which were not offered on our shores until 2008. Several components have been removed, including the front and rear bumpers and door skins. Any accompanying replacement parts are shown in the photo gallery. This car is being offered as a partially complete project, has not been started while in Bonhams' care, and it is unknown what additional items are needed for completion. Suitable for parts or as the basis for a restoration or customization, it is rare opportunity to obtain one of the most innovative and clever microcars of the modern era. Footnotes: Note, due to California emissions laws, this vehicle may only be sold to an out-of-state resident for use outside the state of California or to a licensed automotive dealer. Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
