Albert Hirschfeld (1903-2003) Piccadilly Circus signed 'HIRSCHFELD' (lower right) ink on board 21 7/8 x 29 7/8 in. (55.6 x 75.9 cm.) Executed circa 1959. Footnotes: Provenance Alexander H. Cohen (1920-2000) and Hildy Parks Cohen (1926-2004), New York, from the artist. By descent to the present owner from the above, 2004. Albert Hirschfeld executed the present work for the creation of the front curtain of the 1959 Broadway show At the Drop of a Hat, starring the English comedy team Michael Flanders (1922-1975) and Donald Swann (1923-1994). As Hirschfeld wrote, 'The total cast comprised two men, one a bearded gentlemen in a wheelchair and the other, a madman at the piano.' Hidden in the crowd is the Hirschfeld family standing by the bus nearest to the foreground, Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) in a flowered hat at center, and a figure in the foreground that is believed to be screenwriter SJ Perelman (1904-1979), a close friend of Hirschfeld.
